Shell targets grid-restricted EV forecourts with 360kWh battery

Shell targets grid-restricted EV forecourts with 360kWh battery

Energy company has begun trialling its new electricity storage solution in the Netherlands By Will Trinkwon: 2 mins read: 8 March 2021

Shell is trialling large batteries for energy storage at its EV charging forecourts, with the aim of providing ultra-fast EV charging in areas with restricted access to national grids.

Implemented in pilot form at Shell’s forecourt in Zaltbommel, the Netherlands, the system comprises a 360kWh on-site battery that stores electricity to increase capacity.

This allows drivers to use two 175kW EV chargers simultaneously. Normally, such performance would require a costly grid upgrade, but the presence of an on-site battery avoids this. read more

Shell puts electric charge into green energy future

Shell puts electric charge into green energy future

Emily Gosden, Energy Editor The Times

Royal Dutch Shell plans to operate as many as 2.5 million electric vehicle charging points globally by 2030 under a new emissions-reduction strategy that will see its oil output decline.

The Anglo-Dutch oil giant sought to flesh out its 2050 net zero emissions goal with a plan to focus on customer-facing business such as electricity sales, rather than power generation like its peers. It intends to operate half a million charging points by 2025, up from 60,000 today, and could increase this to 2.5 million by the end of the decade. read more

Shell’s EV charging arm signs partnership deal with Mazda

Shell’s EV charging arm signs partnership deal with Mazda

Shell’s electric vehicle (EV) charging arm NewMotion has agreed a partnership with Mazda.

Electric Car Charging Stations Are Finally About to Take Off

Bloomberg News: Laura Millan Lombrana and Rachel Morison: June 23, 2020

Electric Car Charging Stations Are Finally About to Take Off

(Bloomberg) — The electric vehicle sector has been stuck for years with a chicken-and-egg problem. Until there were extensive networks of public charging stations, a critical mass of people would never feel comfortable driving EVs–but until a critical mass of people were driving EVs, there was no sense in investing in extensive networks of public charging stations.

It may be the coronavirus pandemic that finally breaks the stalemate. BloombergNEF’s latest Long-Term Electric Vehicle Outlook predicts that EVs sales will experience a smaller dip than traditional auto sales as a result of the broader economic squeeze, and that they’ll bounce back more quickly once the market recovers. EVs and the infrastructure needed to charge them have also been a part of many of the stimulus packages announced by European and Asian governments. Just in the past few weeks, Germany included chargers in its €2.5 billion proposed economic package, and the European Union announced that it’s aiming to have 1 million public chargers by 2025, from fewer than 200,000 today. read more

71% of Yorkshire people are thinking of buying electric cars

YORKSHIRE and Humberside has reached a tipping point when it comes to electric cars, with the majority of consumers in the region (71%) now ‘considering’ purchasing one for their next vehicle.

The findings from Shell Energy come after the Government announced plans to bring forward the ban on the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles by five years from 2040 to 2035.

Of those surveyed in Yorkshire and Humberside who said they would consider an EV as their next car, 81% stated that a desire to ‘do their bit for the planet’ made an EV more appealing. read more

METRO: Business briefing: Drivers feel empowered to switch to electric cars

SEVEN out of ten Britons plan to buy an electric car when they trade in their current vehicle, a survey shows.

Cheaper fuel costs and being seen to do more to clean up the planet are major motivating factors, found Shell Energy.

Another is the phasing out of petrol and diesel cars — after the government revealed sales of new ones will be ended in 2035, five years earlier than planned.

Colin Crooks, the chief executive of Shell Energy, said: ‘We support the need for the UK to move faster to meet climate targets and research shows there is public support for the earlier ban on traditional car sales.’ read more

Biggest battery in Europe set to land on British shores

By Sam Morgan | EURACTIV.com

Oil and gas giant Shell has plans for a 100-megawatt grid storage battery in the west of England. It is slated to be the biggest battery in Europe once it is completed later this year and will be crucial to the UK’s quest to remain the continent’s top wind power player.

The battery project in the county of Wiltshire aims to store renewable power in two 50MW cells and then sell it to consumers when demand and prices are high.

“Projects like this will be vital for balancing the UK’s electricity demand and supply as wind and solar power play bigger roles in powering our lives,” said Shell Energy Europe vice president David Wells. read more
