Chief executives of some of the largest U.S. oil companies promised to collaborate with the Biden administration in its campaign against climate change during a meeting Monday with White House National Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy.

The oil industry leaders pledged support for federal regulations explicitly limiting emissions of methane from wells and other oilfield equipment — a declaration that dovetails with President Joe Biden’s vow to clamp down on leaks of the potent greenhouse gas. read more

Oil Giant Shell Victimized In December 2020 Hack

Oil Giant Shell Victimized In December 2020 Hack

Lee Mathews: Senior Contributor Cybersecurity: March 23, 2021 Royal Dutch Shell, the parent company of U.S.-based Shell Oil Company, has announced a security incident on its corporate website. Dozens of other companies were impacted by the same attack.

In December of 2020 hackers targeted a specific piece of hardware, Accellion’s File Transfer Appliance, with previously-unreported vulnerabilities. Once they breached the vulnerable servers the hackers began exfiltrating data.

Shell’s breach notice states that some of the files stolen “contained personal data and others included data from Shell companies and some of their stakeholders.” That tracks with what other victims of the attack reported — victims that include law firm Jones Day, Bombardier, Qualys and grocery chain Kroger. read more

THIRD-PARTY CYBER SECURITY INCIDENT IMPACTS SHELL

Mar 16, 2021

Shell has been impacted by a data security incident involving Accellion’s File Transfer Appliance. Shell uses this appliance to securely transfer large data files.

Upon learning of the incident, Shell addressed the vulnerabilities with its service provider and cyber security team, and started an investigation to better understand the nature and extent of the incident. There is no evidence of any impact to Shell’s core IT systems as the file transfer service is isolated from the rest of Shell’s digital infrastructure. read more

SHELL COMMENTS ON THE VERDICT FROM THE MILAN TRIBUNAL OVER OPL-245

Mar 17, 2021

Ben van Beurden, Chief Executive of Royal Dutch Shell plc (“RDS” or the “Company”), today made the following statement after the Milan Tribunal acquitted the company of charges related to Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL) 245 in Nigeria:

“We welcome today’s decision by the Milan Tribunal. We have always maintained that the 2011 settlement was legal, designed to resolve a decade-long legal dispute and unlock development of the OPL 245 block. At the same time, this has been a difficult learning experience for us. Shell is a company that operates with integrity and we work hard every day to ensure our actions not only follow the letter and spirit of the law, but also live up to society’s wider expectations of us.” read more
