Shell Energy signs solar PPA for energy produced by EDF California project

Rod Walton:

EDF Renewables North America and Shell Energy North America have signed a 15-year power purchase agreement for 132 MW of solar output in Riverside County, California.

The Maverick 7 project is part of the Palen Solar site to be built on 3,140 acres of federal lands. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management completed the federal permitting process approving the project in October 2018.

The project is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2021.

“Palen Solar, with a total of 500 MW of solar capacity, demonstrates EDF Renewables’ long-term commitment to solar development in California,” said Dai Owen, vice president of power marketing for EDF Renewables. “The project uniquely positions the company to help load-serving entities meet their long-term carbon goals and obligations under California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) by offering smaller tranches at industry-leading prices.” read more

Australian workers concerned Prelude jobs going overseas

Workers concerned Prelude jobs going overseas

A COALITION of two heavyweight unions, the Offshore Alliance, has condemned Shell Australia’s alleged decision to outsource work from Australia to India.

According to the Australian Workers Union and the Maritime Union of Australia, work previously undertaken by Australian employees – including Permit Writing responsibilities – have been outsourced to India, a claim Shell has refuted.

The Offshore Alliance yesterday accused Shell of “training up Indian workers” instead of investing in the local workforce.

“Shell are (sic) on our coast and taking our gas resources – the least they can commit to is using Australian workers for all Prelude related tasks,” Offshore Alliance said.

Permit writing work is generally undertaken by employees familiar with the facility and who have ongoing interaction with project-based personnel.

The Offshore Alliance told Energy News permit writing requires detailed knowledge of work scope, hazards and controls, the isolations and temporary defeats, and that the work was most suitable to Australian workers aboard the Prelude or at the very least based in Australia. read more

Protesters banned from 500-meter safety zone around platforms

Greenpeace activists boarded North Sea platforms in October

Royal Dutch Shell Plc won a court ruling preventing environmental protesters from boarding unmanned oil installations in the North Sea.

Greenpeace activists in October boarded two of Shell’s offshore platforms in the Brent field to protest decommissioning plans they claimed will leave “hazardous oily sludge” in the sea. A judge in Edinburgh, Scotland, said that the protesters had no right to enter the installations, and are now banned from going within a 500-meter (1,640-feet) safety zone around the platforms. read more

BBC NEWS: Shell wins legal bid to prevent Greenpeace boarding installations

Energy giant Shell has won a court order preventing environmentalists from boarding unmanned North Sea installations.

Lawyers acting for the company went to the Court of Session in Edinburgh seeking an interim interdict against Greenpeace.

It comes after protesters boarded platforms in the Brent field off Shetland in October.

Lady Carmichael ruled the activists had no right to enter the installations.

Greenpeace had claimed an order would breach its right to protest, and described the ruling as a “setback” – but said a possible appeal would be considered. read more
